Tavis Quits TJMS; Fallout from political immaturity, maybe!

tavis smiley

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Tavis Smiley quits the Tom Joyner Morning Show!!! According to Joyner Tavis has too much on his plate to continue doing commentary on TJMS…..Uh, yeah right. C’mon Tavis cut the bull, it’s more likely the verbal beat downs you were taking on the air became too much. But, what does this say about us? As I have said before its political immaturity sitting over the Black population like a London fog, its quite ugly and it needs to cease and desist NOW! Black people are voting for Sen. Obama to the tune of some 90%, and yet anyone that won't join Obamamania is derided as a handkerchief head, bowing & scraping plantation loving neegrow. For instance check what happened when my man at Ghetto Proverbs posed a hypothetical question concerning Barak Obama and Karl Rove. I am amazed at the venom that spews from the mouths, pens and keyboards of some Black folk.

Tavis, though some of the ‘New Neegrows” as they call themselves, are giving out the serious tongue lashings, I would have thought you had a tougher epidermis than you’re displaying. Too much on your plate. I seriously doubt that brotha. I would've hoped you would have stayed around and admonished the mind state of some Neegrows that feel they have the right to call other Black folk slave minded, instead of critical thinkers about the presidency this time around.  And, not just running to jump on the Obama-train out of the shear emotion of seeing “those little Black girls running and playing it the white house.”

Many of us have our opinions and often they don’t set well with others. But, hell that’s just what they are OPINIONS. This should be expected and understood as we are NOT a monolithic people. And unfortunately in this election Black people are showing a level of political immaturity that I would have never expected. I am in shock at the way we are behaving as a people. There is no reason I should believe the our icons of the past, Dr. King, El Hajj Malik El Shabazz, Huey P. Newton, Kwame Toure and others would have readily been on the Obama train. I am not so sure any of them would have been a supporter. Yet, somehow the “New Neegrow” attempts to pressure some of us by saying just this.  I am yet disappointed in Mr. Smiley for not defending his right to speak his mind.  But, the man has to make his own decisions for his peace of mind.

Nice post Ensayn! Last week, while discussing politics with some of my co-workers (which is something that I never do, as they've all decided that I'm a militant/black panther type :-)), I asked them if they thought any of our past icons would support Obama. I told them that I seriously doubted if any of them would, and suddenly I became the enemy. "How dare you say anything bad about Obama!" Yeah...whatever.

I think that I'm getting truly annoyed at the fanatical way some of us (most of us?) worship Obama. I had every intention of voting for him in May...but now I'm seriously rethinking my decision.

BHC, This really has me baffled, I guess I didn't think Black people would really be acting this way. I don't think we all have to agree on Obama or any other politician or issue. But, those of us that aren't on the Obama-train are often become the enemy. On your decision think it over and weigh all the options. For me the media loves him too much and I am not quite sure why.

I pray this is a turning point for Mr. Smiley. I had blackamerica's article listed today as things to read. I had only heard he had quit but Joyner was questioning the truth and validity, as to why.

Personally, I'm an Obama girl, who is actively supporting campaigning phonebanking and fundraising. I was very disappointed hearing some of the things Tavis has said about the Senator & his refusal to allow Michelle OBama to sit on the panel at The State of The Black Union.

I'm even more sadden by and that's the right terminology, the words used & the hate expressed from my Afrikkan American people who are not in support of the Senator. It's not called for, it's not needed.

Although, I will not put it under a microscope, try to disect nor explain it. Whites & other races pick him apart try to crucify him with their words etc. Yet, somehow it's understood an accepted, not put into question. That's why I won't go there with it. I won't let it drive a wedge between us. I'm not going to give the White Man a 'minstrel' show.

However. I'm speaking truth as The Truth Seeker, I really don't understand how you could be an African American in the year 2008 and throw your support behind a Hillary Clinton or the rest of those --- .

Nope, I just can't see it. I cannot trust a white man before I trust him - Obama that is. Because, there is one thing, which I have learned "The White Man's Word is Bond. He has proven this all throughout History!" LOL

ps. thanks for stopping by - don't be a stranger.

Hi VickiLynne, I really appreciate you passing through & please come back again. In 2008 we, all people in this country, should question all the candidates. We should not be so positive and sure that because Obama has black skin that he will not be doing the white man's bidding.

Though she will not be president, nor will she get the airtime to express her position, Cynthia McKinney is a Black woman, and a candidate running for president. She is the only person running, that was a congresswoman that did not vote in any way, shape, or form for the illegal war in Iraq. None of the candidates can say that, none. She also initiated a move to impeach George W. Bush. None of the candidates can say this, none. She surely speaks truth to power.
So, people don't have to cast a vote for McCain, McKinney is an alternative. A Black female alternative.

Our people are deeply emotionally invested in seeing "Black faces in high places." The last time I saw this type of "you better get on the train" talk was with Clarence Thomas.

What I find curious is that this degree of venom & vitriol is never directed towards real internal enemies---the Ward Connerlys, the Clarence Thomases, etc. Even though these 2 men have deeply damaged the interests of the Black community in ways that affect large numbers of us. I guess we're not up in arms about them (and their ilk) because their betrayals don't involve denying us the pleasure of seeing a Black person get a prominent job---the pleasure of seeing symbolic progress.

It's crazy.

P.S.--You're doing great work with your blog! It's appreciated.

Peace.

Khadija, once again you have spoken the truth. I think what you have pointed out about Black people not being up in arms about Connerly and Thomas is absoutley correct. We forget somehow that Clarence Thomas is on the Supreme Court that selected Dubya!

I guess this is the same treatment Obama will get should he win the presidency and show white folk he is not "a president for black people" by mashing down on the Black population.
